Description:
Democracy Is To Choose is a Democracy Video Challenge 2009 finalist film directed by Vid Rajin of Media Education Centre. It tells the story of a political, social and philosophical system gone wrong.
Making of:
Envisioning an animation dealing with political issues wasn’t easy, considering I would never have imagined myself in such a position. The motivation was the Democracy Video Challenge which I found through a website. This Challenge, organised by government, gave all the people around the globe 3 minutes to finish the sentence: ‘Democracy is…’ It was indeed a challenge, and quite an interesting one. The initial idea was to depict a “bad” society (personified by a greedy monarch), and then through collective action turn it into “good” society. Miomir Rajcevic, my mentor from Media Education Centre, proposed to stick to the first part of the idea, and make it an endless cycle where individuals aren’t allowed to grasp their freedom. In the end, the audience have to figure out the meaning for themselves, with a slight hint in the punchline.
Fun facts: This is a 3-minute version of the story made for contest. The whole story will also be told in a longer format.
